The Environmental ACTION Group (with help from Furman Sustainability) has provided a list of guidelines to lighten your eco-footprint while going about your day.
Remember, every little bit helps!
|
- Turn off lights, computers, printers, copiers, and other appliances that are not in use. Keep the lights off when natural lighting is sufficient.
- Install compact fluorescent light bulbs.
- Cycle or walk to class or work. Carpool every time you have to drive.
- Buy local products and food.
- Refuse packaged products. Bring your own mug with you. Shop in bulk sections of stores (bringing used bags and containers); frequent businesses that offer durable serve ware.
- Lower the temperature of your dorm room and close the window when the heat is on.
- Reduce water use by taking fewer and/or shorter showers and conserve water when brushing teeth, washing your face, or shaving.
- Identify and repair drafty windows, doors or areas (call Facilities Services for campus repairs).
- Turn off venting hoods in home and labs when not in use.
- Reduce the drying time when doing laundry -- it will save kilowatt hours and your clothes will last longer.
- Choose Energy Star home and office appliances such as computers, copiers, refrigerators, lights and washers.
- Re-use plastic bags, boxes, and jars.
- Recycle!
- Save paper by printing double sided, reusing paper and using recycled paper. Take a copy of The Paladin that has already been read by someone else instead of getting a new one.
- Remember: There is no such thing as not making a difference!
